Principle # 4: Integrated learning makes subject matter more meaningful and makes learning more effective.
Integrating subjects, such as the arts and history, or language arts and science, helps students make meaningful connections and enhances learning.
My 13-year-old enjoys reading historical fiction. The time period becomes more vivid, and the people become more real when history is studied through literature.
When we study history we also include music and art. Students make important connections when they see history through the eyes of artists and musicians.
When my oldest son built a fence for a school garden, he integrated math and language arts. Working on a project of this scale brought meaning and purpose to these subjects. He also developed valuable skills related to leadership, communication, problem-solving, and critical thinking.
